Developmental Edits are here to help with the overall shape of your story. This includes working with the structure of your story (character arcs, plot, theme and organization of ideas). If your worried about how your story is shaping up, this is a good place to start.

Copy Edits are done on a near final draft of the story. For different editors, it can mean different things. For my services, I focus on grammar, readability, repetitive words, and continuity. This is a smoothing down of any remaining rough edges on your manuscript.

Proofreading is the last pass on a manuscript directly before publishing. This catches final typos, grammar mistakes, and missing punctuation.

There are times when that writing isn’t as big as a novel or thesis paper but may still need a professional pair of “extra ears.”

Meet the Editor
My name is Shanna Hovley. I’m an experienced Utah based editor excited to take your project to the next level. I love hiking in the mountains with my adorable dog and eating ice cream for dinner. I love fantasy and science fiction but also have a soft spot for a certain ghost hunting series by Jonathon Stroud.
Utah has a wonderful and incredibly talented author community that I’m proud to have been a part of since 2014. During this time in the community, I’ve edited numerous fiction novels as well as for serialized web content. I’ve also spent two years on the Storymakers Committee.
I’m experienced with the Chicago Manual of style and have skill with AP and APA. More importantly, I know when to strictly stick to the rules and when to break the rules to favor a strong voice and overall style of a manuscript.
